After the release of Birth and the Birth CLAWS Set, releasing Birth Prototype was a no brainer. He was released through Tamashii Web in April, 2012 for ¥3,675. Birth Prototype is the form of Birth used during the prototype phases of the system, and was used when Date returned to help in the fight against the Greeeds. The only key difference is that the eyes glow green instead of red, and he has red markings on all of the capsule ports on his armor. These were apparently used as trackers while documenting data on the system in development, or just to make him different, either or. As a prototype system, Birth Prototype can only use the Breast Cannon and Crane Arm CLAW Modules. Needless to say, those are included with this release, though it’s worth noting that the clip that attached to Birth’s wrist to act as a stabilizer in the Crane Arm isn’t included. Also included is an exclusive tip to the Crane Arm that is covered in Cell Medals. Another added bonus on top of Birth’s hands is a new hand that is holding a bunch of Cell Medals. Since the hands are the same, you can use these parts on the original Birth as well. Birth Prototype also includes the Birth Buster, if that wasn’t a gimme. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with the figure, the release is just a bit of a let down. The only incentives to purchase are the Crane Arm piece and the new hand. No Tricera Candroid, no Gotou backpack, nothing. Not saying an incentive is needed, but considering this is just a package of already released things, the inclusion of something additional would have been a nice touch. As it stands, if you want another Birth to represent Date on your shelf, this isn’t a bad (or expensive) purchase. To top it off, if you didn’t get the CLAWS Set, you get two of the more heavily used CLAW Modules with this release that work just fine. While certainly not bad, it’s just hard to recommend for the non-Birth enthusiast.
