In an odd turn of events, Tamashii Nations unveiled an S.H.Figuarts release of none other than Nintendo’s beloved icon, Mario! After a show or two of hype, Mario was finally released in May, 2014 for only ¥2,500. Due to his smaller size, and lack of accessories, the price was able to be pretty reasonable, so anyone and everyone could pick this guy up. Included with the figure is a Super Mushroom, “?” Block, a Coin, and a small stand for the coin. The figure itself is fantastic, and the best Mario we’ve gotten in the history of the character. He’s accurate to the current 3D model, and despite his size and shape, has superb articulation in the arms and legs. My only major complaint is the lack of a proper neck, meaning this guy can’t really look in many directions. You may note the small accessory count, and that’s because Mario was released alongside two Playsets. Playset A contains two normal bricks, another “?” block, a Goomba, another coin, two different length coin stands, a singular block stand, a triple block stand, and a green Tamashii Stage! Playset B contains a pipe, a deeper setting pipe top, a Goomba, another coin, two different length coin stands, a Green Shell, alternate hands for Mario, and pegs to connect the shell to Mario’s hands. Combine both playsets and you can make a fantastic Mario themed display! A lot of the display value of this toy comes in the playsets, so you’re looking at $65 for the complete package. If a diorama is of your interest, you’ll want the playsets. However, this figure is great on his own, and makes for a great addition to a Nintendo themed line-up alongside the D-Arts/S.H.Figuarts Pokémon releases, as well as Figma Samus, Link, and Pit. If you’re looking for a simple, affordable display piece, S.H.Figuarts Mario all by himself will suit you just fine. No matter how you go about it, it’s a pretty nice release.
