Everyone’s been asking me to do more Turtles reviews. I collect the figures, I love the show, but I just can’t seem to find the time to fit them into my review schedule. But I’ve decided to bring them back in the cutest way possible, Half Shell Heroes! Half Shell Heroes is Playmates answer to the “Playskool” line of figures that every franchise seems to tap into for the toddler market. Transformers has Rescue Bots, Marvel has Super Hero Adventures, and the list goes on. Half Shell Heroes brings us our favorite characters from the current Nickelodeon TV series, shrinks them down, and adds an extra helping of adorable. In this review, I take a look at the basic figure assortment for the series. These retail for $6.99 at most retailers, but can go as high as $8.99 at some stores.

The Turtles each come packed with a vehicle, while the other figures are available in two packs. The first wave consists of nine separate releases: Leonardo with Glider, Donatello with Luge, Raphael with Bike, Michelangelo with Skateboard, Splinter & April, Casey Jones & Metalhead, Kraang & Leatherhead, Shredder & Foot Soldier, and Dogpound & Fishface. From a value standpoint, I think they’re reasonable. For $7 you either get two figures, or a figure and a nifty little vehicle. While I personally don’t like the vehicles outside of the glider, kids will probably get a kick out of them. Each figure has the same basic points of articulation in the head, shoulders, and hips. You’re not going to get crazy poses, but it’s enough to let the characters get arm positions and sit down and such. Plenty for the target market for these figures. Paint applications are minimal, and are obviously best on the Turtles (they don’t have to share budget with another figure), but the two pack characters are still great looking, but might need some sprucing up for picky collectors.

Speaking of collectors, these are obviously not for them in the slightest. I am ALWAYS drawn to these toddler lines because of how adorable they are. I honestly can’t resist looking over and seeing these adorable renditions of characters I really appreciate. Most people will find their jam in the main TMNT line, but for the target market, I think these are fantastic little releases. If you have a toddler or young one in your house that loves Turtles as much as you do, these are great little pick ups for them. Not only do we have a wide variety of figures right off the bat, the line expands into many vehicles as well (bikes, cars, the Shelraiser, etc.) as well as play sets, larger sound action figures, plushes, and more. These are for kids, and they serve their purpose great. I can’t wait to see what other characters the line brings.
