Imaginext Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – Mastodon, Triceratops, & Sabertooth Tiger Zords
$14.99 Each (Purchased from Toys R Us)
Power Rangers would be nothing without their Zords, so of course they need to be in the Imaginext line too! The smaller of the Zords were released in the line at a $14.99 price point. Each Zord includes the Zord with an action feature, two to four missiles, and a Ranger figure of that respective color. While more or less the same, these Ranger figures do not come with their weapons. The first batch features the Mastodon Zord, the Triceratops Zord, and the Sabertooth Tiger Zord, along with the Black, Blue, and Yellow Rangers respectively.
Each Zord features an action feature of some sort. Simply place a Ranger onto the Imaginext Pad located on the cockpit of each Zord (or just use your finger), and turn the dial to activate the feature. The Mastodon Zord raises its head as if thrusting with its horns. The Triceratops Zord thrusts its head forward. Finally the Sabertooth Tiger Zord opens and closes its mouth. As mentioned, a Ranger figure does not need to be on the pad to activate the feature, but it often makes activating it easier.
The Ranger figures themselves are identical in sculpt, and in the case of the Black Ranger, are pretty much identical period. However in the Yellow Ranger figure (though it is faint) and Blue Ranger figure, I can see some small speckles of glitter. I don’t know if this is intentional or what, considering the Black Ranger doesn’t have this. As mentioned none of the Rangers have their weapons, so fans of the weapons will still have to buy the double pack figures.
The Zords themselves are rather impressive. They are definitely big and blocky, but retain the classic design fans of the show will know. Adult fans will more than likely complain at the lack of articulation, but given the fact that these are toys meant for pre-schoolers, I don’t see it as a big deal. The key details that need to be there are, and they look great on a shelf for sure. It’s a shame there is no Pterodactyl Zord as of this posting. My favorite bit of detail is the fact that on each cockpit is the three circle Ranger-Animal-Zord logos seen in the show! This is such a small detail that the intended audience would most likely never get. I just really love that.
Each Zord has a missile launcher or two stationed on the Zord. The Mastodon has two launchers on its back. The Triceratops, as seen in the show, has two launchers on its tail. The tail is articulated to swing up and around to fire forward. Finally the Sabertooth Tiger has one launcher on the right side of its back. Each toy includes double the missiles just in case you lose some.
While obviously built for a pre-schooler, I can’t help but love these things. I’m a huge fan of the mini figures for my favorite brands, and these are no exception. Being able to have your Power Rangers hang out with Spongebob and Batman in one toy line is great for the imagination, and tossing in other brands like Half-Shell Heroes is even better. Whether you’re buying them for yourself or buying them for a child, these are well worth the $14.99 asking price.
