Unboxing: 1Up Box – December, 2015 “Galaxy”

I was contacted by the kind folks at 1Up Box to become a 1Up Box Ambassador and show you guys what 1Up Box is all about! 1Up Box is a subscription box service that began in September, 2014 in a style that is very similar to Loot Crate, priding themselves as “a distributor that offers something remarkable, something creative, and something unique in which all geeks and gamers can fancy.” With a name like 1Up Box you would expect a focus on gaming, but the boxes have shown that 1Up Box plans to take gaming as a core, and give it a bit of a pop culture spin. Each 1Up Box is only $12.92 plus $6 shipping and handling. Boxes can also be subscribed to in three month and six month plans for added savings. Each Box is promised to include over $30 of merchandise totaling 4-6 items on average. Plus an exclusive shirt is always included! As mentioned, each month will follow a particular theme at the core.

December, 2015’s Theme: Galaxy

• “Galaxy” Shirt
• Plush Chewbacca
• “Galaxy” Lanyard
• Captain Kirkby Print
• Rocket Raccoon Sticker
• “Galaxy” Pin

With a theme like Galaxy and The Force Awakens storming its way into theaters this month, I’m not surprised at all that most of this box was inspired by Star Wars. The shirt is a wonderful blend of Star Wars with the classic bus stop scene from My Neighbor Totoro, sticking true to the usual 1Up Box mash-ups. The plush Chewie is pretty awesome. The sticker of Rocket and the print of “Captain Kirkby” are both nicely done, and I love a good pun. I’m not big on Star Trek to truly appreciate it, so the presence of Trek on the lanyard bums me a tiny bit, but I respect the franchise enough to not really care. I also want to point out the pin is Wall-E holding baby Groot. Not the best they’ve done, but still a pretty fun box.

As with any of these subscription services, they aren’t for everyone. However, 1Up Box is currently the cheapest box on the market at only $12.92 before shipping. While you don’t get as much as you would in a Nerd Block or Loot Crate, you still more than get your money’s worth. In essence, it’s a great box for those that are on a little bit of a tighter budget, but still want to experience the joy of receiving that box in the mail. With them doing themes, you once again have the benefit of having a rough idea of what’s in store, to know if you want to get that month’s box or not. For those of you that can’t stomach the act of random goodies, well, these just aren’t for you.
