I was contacted by the kind folks at 1Up Box to become a 1Up Box Ambassador and show you guys what 1Up Box is all about! 1Up Box is a subscription box service that began in September, 2014 in a style that is very similar to Loot Crate, priding themselves as “a distributor that offers something remarkable, something creative, and something unique in which all geeks and gamers can fancy.” With a name like 1Up Box you would expect a focus on gaming, but the boxes have shown that 1Up Box plans to take gaming as a core, and give it a bit of a pop culture spin. Each 1Up Box is only $12.92 plus $6 shipping and handling. Boxes can also be subscribed to in three month and six month plans for added savings. Each Box is promised to include over $30 of merchandise totaling 4-6 items on average. Plus an exclusive shirt is always included! As mentioned, each month will follow a particular theme at the core.

January, 2016’s Theme: Legend

• “Pugs of Legend” Shirt
• Deadpool Adorbez
• Zero to Hero Cup Cooler
• Legend of Zelda/Game of Thrones Patch
• Super Mario Dog Tag Booster Pack
• “Legend” Pin

Legend is an overly generic theme that can encompass pretty much anything you could imagine. This “Legend” box contains items from The Legend of Zelda, Game of Thrones, Super Mario, Deadpool, Hercules…?, and something I can only assume is League of Legends but probably isn’t. The T-Shirt, “Pugs of Legend” confuses me, because I don’t get the reference, but as someone who owned a pug for several years, I can’t help but love it, even if I don’t get it. The Deadpool Adorbez figure is well, adorbes, and is enough to get you hyped for the upcoming movie. The cup cooler thing is a nice little Starbucks parody, but unless it’s imitating a Hercules design from a video game, I don’t really get the point. The patch is a nice little mash up of Game of Thrones and Legend of Zelda, two things I enjoy, so I like it quite a bit. Finally we have the Super Mario dog tag booster pack, which pleases me as we got Luigi. Would have preferred Roy or Toad, but hey, what can you do? The pin is honestly my favorite thing. Mew snug in a blanket inside the Poké Ball is nothing short of cute. Not an amazing box by any means, but it has some cute stuff in it nonetheless.

As with any of these subscription services, they aren’t for everyone. However, 1Up Box is currently the cheapest box on the market at only $12.92 before shipping. While you don’t get as much as you would in a Nerd Block or Loot Crate, you still more than get your money’s worth. In essence, it’s a great box for those that are on a little bit of a tighter budget, but still want to experience the joy of receiving that box in the mail. With them doing themes, you once again have the benefit of having a rough idea of what’s in store, to know if you want to get that month’s box or not. For those of you that can’t stomach the act of random goodies, well, these just aren’t for you.
