May’s Mythical Pokémon of the month is Darkrai, the pitch-black Pokémon from the Sinnoh Region. Like Mew that kickstarted this whole thing, Darkrai’s Clip ‘n’ Carry Poké Ball figure and plush toy are exclusive to GameStop stores. They were all released on May 1st in super limited quantities. For those that want this, and haven’t gotten their hands on it yet, keep an eye at your local stores and GameStop.com for hopeful restocks. The figure retails for $9.99 (as with Mew, it has no box, and instead is in a loose, wrapped Premiere Ball) while the plush retails for $16.99.

The figure looks really nice, stands well, and looks great with the pearlescent finish. As with most Monster Collection figures (the line from Japan), it’s not in scale with other releases, but is in the same roughly 2″ height. I’d rather have had something else besides a Premiere Ball (Dusk Ball would have been nice), but it is what it is.

The plush as always is pretty neat, but unfortunately is the weakest of the four released thus far. Darkrai is an amazing Pokémon in my opinion, but it unfortunately doesn’t translate well into a plush toy. Darkrai is a Pokémon with whispy hair and arms that just look too puffy and straight on the plush. I still like it, and it still looks like Darkrai, but it doesn’t have the same charm as the others.

As a fan of Darkrai, I’m happy May is finally upon us. The GameStop exclusivity is a bit obnoxious, as GameStop stores just don’t have a huge stock of these like a Toys R Us would for their exclusives. Hopefully stores keep restocking, and online supply is strong so fans don’t have a pitch-black hole in their collection.
