I ultimately passed on the first movie’s action figures (which is something I ultimately regret by the way), so I was on the fence about picking up anything from Out of the Shadows. Playmates was kind enough to send me the Turtle Tactical Truck to take a look at, and along side it was Leonardo, Michelangelo, The Shredder, and Foot Soldier. I at least had to pick up the other two Turtles, and when I spotted a 2/$8 deal mishap at Meijer stores, I decided to go all in and get all the figures I could find. Here’s a look at the entire first wave of Out of the Shadows basic figures. Each generally retail for $8.99 to $9.99 depending on the location.
There are some stand out figures in the line for sure. All four Turtles are pretty great, with Leo being my favorite of the bunch. Articulation isn’t the greatest, particularly in the legs, but it gets the job done you can get a lot of nice poses out of the gang. Bebop and Rocksteady are the two other stand outs for me. both actually feature some of the best articulation, which is funny given the size of these beasts. If you get any of the figures, these are definitely the six to keep an eye out for.
Splinter is sort of hanging out in the middle. You can’t really DO a whole lot with a robe wearing rat. He’s not really great, but makes an alright partner to his four sons. Krang is another figure that sort of hangs out somewhere in the middle of the pack. His big robot body lacks some basic articulation, particularly in the shoulders that really bother me. Being able to pull Krang out from the robot body is a necessary touch, though getting him back in is mildly frustrating. Another figure that’s not bad, but not great.
Casey Jones, The Shredder, and the Foot Soldier are bottom of the barrel figures. Casey and Foot Soldier have alright details, but all three molds suffer from absolutely horribly designed legs. The hips are done with pins and swivels, which are usually fine, but with the joint being shoved UP into the hips, and the joint facing forward, you get zero side to side motion in the legs. That means all three of these human figures are stuck in straight standing poses with little to do. The Shredder also looks like he’s wearing pajamas.
While there are stand out figures in the assortment, the whole line is just sort of okay. The Turtles, Bebop, and Rocksteady are all fantastic figures I’d recommend in a heartbeat, but the others range from “okay” to “…”. Hunt down the six stars, and leave the rest for the bargain bin.
