1Up Box – August, 2016 “Speed” Unboxing

I was contacted by the kind folks at 1Up Box to become a 1Up Box Ambassador and show you guys what 1Up Box is all about! 1Up Box is a subscription box service that began in September, 2014 in a style that is very similar to Loot Crate, priding themselves as “a distributor that offers something remarkable, something creative, and something unique in which all geeks and gamers can fancy.” With a name like 1Up Box you would expect a focus on gaming, but the boxes have shown that 1Up Box plans to take gaming as a core, and give it a bit of a pop culture spin. Each 1Up Box is only $12.92 plus $7 shipping and handling. Boxes can also be subscribed to in three month and six month plans for added savings. Each Box is promised to include over $30 of merchandise totaling 4-6 items on average. Plus an exclusive shirt is always included! As mentioned, each month will follow a particular theme at the core.

Contents of August, 2016’s box, as well as my unboxing video are after the jump.

August, 2016’s Theme: Speed

• “PokeRun” Shirt
• Purple Yoshi Plush (Super Mario)
• Winged Necklace (Harry Potter)
• Hedgehog Patch (Sonic the Hedgehog)
• Super Speed Mini Lanyard (The Flash)
• “Speed” Pin

Speed is most certainly key, and with The Flash being hands down my favorite show on TV right now, I was pretty excited. To see items from Sonic the Hedgehog and Yoshi included as well was certainly enough to get me excited. Unfortunately the box only semi-delivered. The shirt features a Pikachu dressed as The Flash with a phone running from an Arcanine. While I like the Pokemon theme, why is the Pikachu even dressed as The Flash? An Arcanine chasing the Pikachu with a phone would be a funny play on all of the weird Pokemon GO trespassing stories I hear about. Maybe this is a new form of Cosplay Pikachu we don’t know about. Yeah, that’s it. The Yoshi plush is adorable. I would have loved Red, but Purple is a color I didn’t even know existed in the plush series, so getting it was certainly a nice surprise. Easily my favorite thing in the box. The other three items are really par at best. The Sonic iron-on patch is actually large and nicely made, and a nice little thing for Sonic fans to iron onto a purse or messenger bag. The lanyard is honestly sort of pointless, and The Flash design on it looks more like a little dude in red spandex then The Flash. The Harry Potter Golden Snitch necklace is nice despite being silver, but isn’t something I’ll ultimately never use. Overally, it’s not the worst box, and there’s enough here for me to like it, but I think 1Up Box needs to find a happy medium between higher-end retail products and interesting exclusive merchandise like they used to have.
