Unboxing: 1Up Box – May, 2015 “Sidekicks”

I was contacted by the kind folks at 1Up Box to become a 1Up Box Ambassador and show you guys what 1Up Box is all about! 1Up Box is a subscription box service that began in September, 2014 in a style that is very similar to Loot Crate, priding themselves as “a distributor that offers something remarkable, something creative, and something unique in which all geeks and gamers can fancy.” With a name like 1Up Box you would expect a focus on gaming, but the boxes have shown that 1Up Box plans to take gaming as a core, and give it a bit of a pop culture spin. Each 1Up Box is only $12.92 plus $6 shipping and handling. Boxes can also be subscribed to in three month and six month plans for added savings. Each Box is promised to include over $30 of merchandise totaling 4-6 items on average. Plus an exclusive shirt is always included! As mentioned, each month will follow a particular theme at the core.

Contents of May 2015’s box, as well as my unboxing video are after the jump.

May, 2015’s Theme: Heroes

• “Fist Bump” T-Shirt
• Adventure Time BMO Plush
• Sidekick Dog Tag
• Beep Boop Drawstring Backpack
• Love My Sidekick Wristband
• Jack of Hearts Decal
• Sidekick Theme Pin
After a pretty great villains box, and a fantastic heroes box, the sidekick box is nothing short of disappointing. The shirt itself is pretty okay. I’m not a huge fan of Adventure Time (I haven’t watched it), so having this BMO character not only take up half the box, but be on the shirt too, is well, alright? I don’t even understand the shirt. Yoshi and BMO are bro-fisting in TRON outfits. Great. The other contents of the box are just sort of okay. I really enjoy the backpack, only because I love R2, and the “beep boop” inside joke. Other than that, nothing screams cool like the POP! vinyl or Triforce necklace in the previous box. Thankfully next month’s theme is “Arcade” so I have high hopes for that one. Here’s hoping!
As with any of these subscription services, they aren’t for everyone. However, 1Up Box is currently the cheapest box on the market at only $12.92 before shipping. While you don’t get as much as you would in a Nerd Block or Loot Crate, you still more than get your money’s worth. In essence, it’s a great box for those that are on a little bit of a tighter budget, but still want to experience the joy of receiving that box in the mail. With them doing themes, you once again have the benefit of having a rough idea of what’s in store, to know if you want to get that month’s box or not. For those of you that can’t stomach the act of random goodies, well, these just aren’t for you.
