Unboxing: 1Up Box – October, 2014 “Phantom”

I was contacted by the kind folks at 1Up Box to become a 1Up Box Ambassador and show you guys what 1Up Box is all about! 1Up Box is a subscription box service that began in September, 2014 in a style that is very similar to Loot Crate, priding themselves as ” a distributor that offers something remarkable, something creative, and something unique in which all geeks and gamers can fancy.” With a name like 1Up Box you would expect a focus on gaming, but the first box has shown that 1Up Box plans to take gaming as a core, and give it a bit of a pop culture spin. Each 1Up Box is only $9.52 plus $5 shipping and handling. Boxes can also be subscribed to in three month and six month plans for added savings. Each Box is promised to include over $30 of merchandise totaling 4-6 items on average. As mentioned, each month will follow a particular theme at the core. Also similar to Loot Crate, shirts can be included in the box too!

• “Zombies by Day, Phantoms by Night” T-Shirt
• “Feeding Time” Magnet
• Super Mario Boo Plush
• Zombie Outbreak Response Unit Drawstring Bag
• Pop Rocks Candy
• The Three Booges Poster/Phantom Theme Booklet
• Phantom Theme Pin
I knew that Phantom would be a pretty interesting theme. Given 1Up Box’s general gear towards gaming and comics, I had a hunch we would see some Boos. The plush is adorable, and the poster will definitely add some Halloween flare to my bathroom wall. I enjoy The Walking Dead, so the bag is really neat. I use these types of bags a lot for short trips, so I’ll make good use of it. I could do without ANOTHER Adventure Time thing in my house, and I don’t like Pop Rocks, so those are really the only duds. I’d like to take a moment to appreciate how awesome the shirt is. Given my love for Marvel, and my girlfriend’s love for Nightmare Before Christmas, the subtle mash up between the two is really awesome. Plus it glows in the dark! How cool is that? Overall, for the price, this is an absolutely amazing box. The plush and the shirt alone win it.
As with any of these subscription services, they aren’t for everyone. However, 1Up Box is currently the cheapest box on the market at only $9.52 before shipping. While you don’t get as much as you would in a Nerd Block or Loot Crate, you still more than get your money’s worth. In essence, it’s a great box for those that are on a little bit of a tighter budget, but still want to experience the joy of receiving that box in the mail. With them doing themes, you once again have the benefit of having a rough idea of what’s in store, to know if you want to get that month’s box or not. For those of you that can’t stomach the act of random goodies, well, these just aren’t for you.
