Loot Crate, Unboxing

Unboxing: Loot Crate – June, 2014

Loot Crate, like Nerd Block, is a monthly subscription service. For $13.37 per month (get it? 1337. INTERNET JOKES!) plus $6 shipping (with three and six month plans as well to save a little money) you receive a box filled with a number of themed “geek and gamer” items supposedly retailing for over $40. Shirts CAN be included, but aren’t necessarily included every month. When they are, the print is exclusive to Loot Crate and can be found nowhere else. Loot Crate also includes a collectible pin and book detailing the theme. The book also has articles and interviews related to the theme as well. Each month carries a specific theme that usually matches something happening in pop culture. For instance, one month was “Titans” dedicated to items based on Attack on Titan and Titanfall. When the Xbox One and PS4 were releasing, the box was “Console Wars.” It’s actually pretty neat. Like Nerd Block, Loot Crate selects one subscriber to receive the “Mega Crate” containing over $750 worth of prizes. While you never really know what’s inside, the franchises are usually easy to guess based on the theme and hints dropped by the Loot Crate crew.

June, 2014’s Theme: Transform

May’s Loot Crate was excellent as always:

• Loot Crate “Transform” Magazine
• Loot Crate “Transform” Pin
• Transformers x The Loyal Subjects Vinyl Figure (Megatron)
• Transformers HexBug (Drift)
• Transformers Sticker (Decepticons)
• MLG Wristband
• MLG Team Stickers
• MLG Promo Card
• (Not Pictured) Three Warheads Sour Candies
• “Marty McPrime” Shirt (Loot Crate Exclusive Print)

Loot Crate has done two themes in a row that are totally my thing, and they’ve done it again with a theme called “Transform” to celebrate the launch of Transformers: Age of Extinction in theaters (starts tonight actually!). I’m a huge Transformers fan, so this was going to possibly be my favorite box yet. Best of all, it was yet another shirt month, and we have an awesome shirt of “Marty McPrime”, an awesome mash-up of Transformers and Back to the Future. Continuing with the Transformers theme, we get a Loyal Subjects vinyl, as well as a new HexBug, along with a little sticker of either the Autobots or Decepticons. I love the Transformers stuff a lot. I’ve always liked the vinyl figures (I’ve only ever bought one) and the HexBugs are actually a hit at my house. Unfortunately this is another Loot Crate (after the Maker Studios stuff from last Crate) we now have a bunch of MLG related things. While I don’t care too much about MLG, the whole “sponsored” Crate items are getting rather annoying. My first Crate, “Dragons” had no such sponsored items, and between Game of Thrones, Elder Scrolls, and D&D, the theme was universal and great. Unfortunately Maker Studios didn’t have much to do with Adventure, and MLG has nothing to do with Transform. It’s more or less just their way of making money, the sponsored products are usually pretty bad, and it just breaks the theme Loot Crate is known for. Hopefully we’ll see less of them in the future. Regardless, I really like the Transformers items in the Crate! Between those and the awesome shirt, it more than makes up for the MLG items.

As with Nerd Block, these are NOT for everyone. While it’s easy to peg what franchises are included based on the theme and images, the items you are getting are still random. However, at only $13.37 before shipping, the price is a bit easier on the wallet (plus shipping is $4 cheaper than Nerd Block thanks to Loot Crate being US based). Plus when you get a crate with a shirt included, the deal is just unbeatable. Really a great deal.
