The Gold Ranger has entered the scene, and with him, his Ptera Zord! The Ptera Zord has the ability to transform by itself into the Ptera Charge Megazord! Included with the toy is a clear Ptera Charger (similar to the clear T-Rex Charger in the Dino Charge Megazord) that can be used the same as a normal one in the Dino Charge Megazord, and used to activate the Ptera Charge Megazord’s cannon feature. On top of being able to transform from dinosaur to robot, the Ptera Charge Megazord can combine with all existing “arm” dinosaurs in the line, as well as the Dino Charge Megazord as a whole to form an all new combination. Quite a lot for one toy!

Right out of the box, there is this weird black chest piece that serves no purpose at all. It clips where the Ptera head clips in. The only purpose I can think of is they wanted a decorative piece to cover up the Dino Charger slot in package, since the package is too thin to have the Ptera head attached. That’s the only purpose. It’s really strange.

The Ptera Zord mode is pretty simple. Of note is that there is a pull out tab that extends from the body that acts as a kickstand of sorts to make sure the Ptera Zord form can stand on a table. Transformation into the Ptera Charge Megazord works much like the Kyoryuger version of the toy did. Simply remove the back portion, flip the legs around, and attach it to the body’s bottom section. Flip the arms down, reveal the head and you’re golden. This main form is also pretty simple, but is always a Megazord that I liked.

Both modes have an action feature. When you insert a Dino Charger into the mouth of the Ptera Zord, a set of cannons attached to the body of the Zord will flip around to face forward. There’s no sounds, or no missiles. The feature is simply cosmetic. Obviously the suit in the show has no cannons like these, and were simply added to give the Zord an action feature like the T-Rex Zord’s feather raising. For fans who want a more screen accurate look, the cannon pack pops right off and can be stored away never to be seen again.

The Ptera Charge Megazord has capability of using any of the “arm” Zords of the line including Stego, Tricera, Para, and Raptor. While the Para-Raptor formation is the one primarily seen in the show, any combination is possible. There is also Zord Builder ports on the legs and shoulders of the Ptera Charge Megazord for even more connection possibilities. The Megazord (while in Ptera Zord mode) can also combine with the Dino Charge Megazord to form a new, currently unnamed combination, featuring the Ptera Zord as a backpack for the Dino Charge Megazord, complete with a new helmet.

Overall, the Ptera Charge Megazord is a great little toy. I’m always a fan of Megazords that are singular in design, and the design in general of this one is pretty unique and just plain works. There’s things I really like about this mold in particular over the Japanese one, but both have their own merits. Fans of the Dino Charge toy line shouldn’t pass this one up, though. Zord Builder could be a bit better, just like the Dino Charge Megazord, but the possibilities are still there, and can still be fun.
